ON GOLDEN POND
The Colony Theatre
by Carol Kaufman Segal

The 1981 film, On Golden Pond, was adapted from Ernest Thomson's 1979 play of the same name. Obviously, due to stage constraints, the film could "paint a better picture" of Golden Pond, Maine. But a brilliant cast performing the play at the Colony Theatre in Burbank, brings to life the characters, the plot and the feel of "seeing" Golden Pond.

Ethel and Norman Thayer are an aging couple who arrive at their summer home in Golden Pond, Maine, for the forty-eighth year. Ethel (a strong performance by Christina Pickles) is effervescent and so pleased to be back for a summer at Golden Pond.

Christina Pickles - Hal Linden

Norman (Hal Linden), in his older years, has become somewhat of a curmudgeon, often cranky and caustic and always speaking of dying. He seems to be at a loss without any interest in life anymore. Ethel obviously loves Norman very much, and tries to keep him occupied and cheer him up. The Thayer's estranged daughter Chelsea (Monette MagrathI) comes to visit them, arriving with her new beau Bill Ray (Jonathan Stewart) and his 13-year-old son Billy Ray (Nicholas Podany).

Chelsea and her father have had a strained relationship for many years. She and Bill tell her parents they are on their way to Europe and ask if they can leave Billy with them for the summer. Ethel has longed for a grandchild and convinces Norman to okay the idea. As fate would have it, Norman and Billy form a strong bond, and it becomes obvious that his and Chelsea's problem stemmed from his not being able to deal with a daughter rather than a son. When Chelsea and Bill return from Europe as a married couple, and Chelsea sees the love between Norman and Billy, the hurt she has felt for years comes to a head, but family proves to be strong in the end.

Linden, himself, is still a youthful elderly man and he seems to change completely into the character of Norman as a more frail 80-year-old man, in a superb performance. Nicholas Podany, is a very talented young man who is a delightful Billy. Each and every performer, astutely directed by Cameron Watson, makes this a first class production.

Not to be left out is Jerry Kernion who performs the role of Charlie Martin, Chelsea's first beau and the town postman with a great laugh. The beautiful scenic design is by John Iacovelli. On Golden Pond is not just a drama; it also offers some humor. One particular scene between Norman and Bill is especially funny. Jonathan Stewart adds so much to the humor by his facial expressions and manner, a true actor all the way.

Performances of On Golden Pond are Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 PM and 8 PM, and Sundays at 2 PM. through August 28. A question-and-answer session will be offered after the performances on August 5 and August 18.
