The Other Mules

In a slight departure from the regular theatre reviews normally seen here, we began the year 2010 by reviewing a new symphony orchestra - the Glendale Philharmonic.  So, it is fitting that we close the year with another detour.  This time we covered a blues band that played in a bowling alley, a not too traditional venue for a band.  But this is Eagle Rock and those who know the little suburb have learned that this eclectic village houses some non-traditional happenings at times.

The Other Mules is far from your average garage band of hopeful teen-agers looking to get signed.

Grant Cilar - Kingfish - Todd Szabo - Kevin Merrill

These guys are all seasoned pros who've been there and done that, not once - not twice - but several times around the block.  Front man "Kingfish" has played with many groups in the US and all over Europe, and the rest of the group has similar credentials.

Their sound is right out of the delta; hard core straight up blues with no gimmicks or stunts. Guitarists Grant Cilar and Kevin Merrill bounce the lead and chords back and forth between them effortlessly while drummer Todd Szabo nails a solid rhythm in the background.  Ever hear a gravel truck rolling downhill?  You will when bassist and lead vocalist Kingfish belts out some of the traditional numbers with a voice that can overpower most instruments at any volume, but can come down to a melancholy tone when called for.  From Muddy Waters to Robert Johnson and everything in between, the group takes ownership of the music with authority and confidence sounding more like Bourbon Street than Sunset Strip.

When the buzz about this band begins to circulate you can bet that you will be hearing more from them all over town.  If you want to hear some of their work check their website and if you "friend" them they will let you know where they will be playing.

Not many groups can boast of commissioning art work that symbolizes the band but The Other Mules have their own painting.  Anthony Guyon has created an oil on canvass work which is available for purchase by contacting the group. Click here to visit the Other Mules website.
