HEAD, THE MUSICAL
Reviewed By Robert Axelrod,

All kidding and punstering aside, HEAD, THE MUSICAL (or as it’s also billed, “EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAVENS!”—A Symphony of Horror) is a darned good show. Based on the old Chiller Theater classic, THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE, HEAD’s twelve song and dance numbers are sexy and upbeat, and make for a slam bang good time of a show.

The plot rings like the movie it’s based on. Dr. Bill Cortner is a scientist experimenting with electronic brain wave stimuli (or something) when he decapitates his fiancé Jan, via a motoring accident while she has placed her head between his knees for some business while he’s driving. He rushes Jan’s head back to his secret lab, where he hooks it up to his gizmo and keeps it alive. He then guiltily stalks the neighborhood seeking a woman with the right body type to attach to the living head. He’s got only 48 hours to accomplish the transfer before the brain expires, so time is of the essence.

Front: David Bickford, Becca Battoe
Rear: Epiphany, Honor Nezzo, Amber Faith

In his quest, Cortner encounters nymphomaniacs, exotic dancers, and even a man-hating lesbian photographer’s model. Director L. Flint Esquerra, musical director Robert Shaw, and choreographer Becca Battoe keep writer-composer Kevin Fry’s words and music coming at the audience at high speed, with plenty of vim and vigor. The girls are good looking and provide an eyeful. The talent in the entire cast,is plentiful. Charles St. Michael leads as Dr. Bill Cortner (get it? “Doctor Bill”), with Stephanie Ann Saunders as fiancé Jan. Fiona Bates, Becca Battoe, David Bickford, Epiphany, Amber Faith, Honor Nezzo, Mark Pinckney, Della Rios(choral assistant), and Chance Havens round out the cast, with Havens doing an especially funny turn as Dr. Bill’s creature in the closet. The cast is backed by an excellent three piece band which includes musical director Shaw in guitar, Kevin Bernal on bass, and Alex Quinteros on drums.
