First class impresario and all around nice guy Michael Sterling (of Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s in Studio City) is now filling the Wednesday night slot at The Canyon Club in Agoura with his new Broadway in Concert series which brings some of LA’s top talent to the fore.

We were invited last Wednesday to experience Steve Gideon's The Happening and for those who remember the era of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, this show is a mini-happening romp back through memory lane.

Gideon who is a triple threat singer, actor and producer has put together a stylish show featuring some of the best songs from the era, and delivers them with the help of a high energy band and a top trio that soon have the crowd tapping in time to the music.  With songs from icons like Lennon and McCartney, Jimmy Webb, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and others the baby boomer crowd fell right into the mood with Gideon leading the hand clapping and chorus. The band, led on piano by musical director Jeff Colella includes guitarist Jack Madjecki, Kirk Smith on Bass and Rod Harbour on drums.  There was lots of banter and shtick about some of the ‘60’s vernacular, (definitions of “groovy” – “tab” – “flower-power” and “happening”) with singers Minta Mullins, Tod Macofsky and Evelyn Halus who provide exceptional backing. The whole gang makes the evening roll along wistfully and having savored the excellent fare earlier, there was little more one could ask for.

A word about dinner. There were three excellent choices of entree, including rib-eye steak, Thai BBQ  Salmon or Lemon Caper Chicken and the aroma of the feast alone was enough to make you wish you had skipped breakfast and lunch before going there just to make room for all three.  The portions are lavish and succulent and the service is top notch, making this club one of the best picks for a night out.
